31, 2007 will mark the 10th Anniversary of the Down East FolkArts
Society’s Bogue Banks Boogie. Since it’s
inception, the Boogie has been a sell-out and a huge success.
A big part of its popularity (aside from the fabulous bands, callers,
and dancers!) has been the wonderful facility at which the event
takes place. The Trinity Camp and Conference Center is a lovely
facility nestled into the maritime forest between the sound and
the sea on one of North Carolina’s gorgeous barrier islands.
Its contemporary buildings offer private, double, and triple occupancy
rooms with private baths, a dining room with great home-cooked
meals (including non-meat selections), and a light and airy recreation
building that offers the best place for dancing in the New Year!
There’s also the opportunity to come a day early or stay
a day longer to better enjoy bird watching, walks on the beach,
or just relaxing with family and friends.
Notorious, BAND
Notorious musicians Eden MacAdam-Somer and Larry Unger bring together traditional and contemporary acoustic music from around the world, creating a dynamic, swinging sound loved by dancers around the country. At home with both classical and popular music, Eden is one of the most exciting and versatile violinists performing today. She has been a featured soloist with symphony and chamber orchestras, jazz and swing bands, bluegrass, and American folk groups. Larry has been a full time musician since 1984 and has presented a diverse range of musical performances at dances, festivals, and concerts across the U.S., Canada, the British Isles and Scandinavia. He has played guitar, banjo, and bass with many top contra dance bands including Reckless Abandon, Uncle Gizmo, and Reckless Ramblers.
Shawn Brenneman, CALLER
Shawn left her full time job at Radford University a year and a half ago to pursue her passions – contra dancing, calling for contra dances, and playing for dances with her contra dance band, House Red. Now that she’s living her dream, Shawn not only calls regularly for dances in her home state of Virginia, but in NC, SC, GA, PA, IN, ME, MA, CA, WA, and CO. as well. She enjoys introducing contra dancing to newcomers, as well as choosing varied, interesting, and challenging material that provides an evening of fun for everyone. Shawn, Eden, and Larry look forward to every chance they can find to work together.
WorkShop: (Dec. 31st at 4 pm)
Workshop – “The Genius of Gene” (Dec. 31st at 4 pm)
Shawn developed her workshop, “The Genius of Gene”, as a tribute to Gene Hubert who passed away in 2006. Gene was one of the most remarkable and prolific contra dance writers of his generation and much beloved by callers and dancers everywhere. The workshop will include some of Gene’s most unique dances, filled with lots of twists and turns and designed to delight!
Something New: Welcome the New Year with a Massage!
FolkArts Society member Craig Hassler specializes in massage fundraisers for Non-Profit organizations and will attend this year’s Boogie to offer his services. His sessions can target the head, neck, shoulders, back, arms, legs, feet and hands – wherever your discomfort hits after a long day or evening of dance! Craig charges $1 a minute (10 minute minimum), of which 25% will be donated to the FolkArts Society.
