Dance

As an affiliate of the Country Dance and Song Society of America (CDSS), the Down East Folk Arts Society sponsors activities for the enjoyment, preservation and study of American traditional dance and music.

Each month, the Society sponsors a Community Contra Dance (sometimes called a Barn Dance). For those unfamiliar with Contra Dancing, it is a form of dancing brought to this country in the 1700's by colonists from the British Isles. It is similar to square dancing, with many of the calls being the same (Dos a Dos and Allemande). But Contra dancers stand in long lines with couples facing one another however, while square dance couples dance in a circle of couples.

Dances are enjoyed by people of all ages and feature live music and callers as well as a "Beginner's Session" for those who have never danced or need a refresher course. The Society also offers classes for Beginners several times a year as well as a New Year's Dance Retreat for more experienced dances.
