Fall 2009 – Winter 2010 Schedule

James Lee Stanley

If you couple a remarkable talent for composing and singing with amazing guitar work and hilarious repartee, you get the genius of James Lee Stanley.  James Lee has been performing since he was 14, and has joined onstage such diverse acts as Bonnie Raitt, Nicolette Larson, and Bill Cosby.  He has been hailed as one of the few all time greats of singer-songwriters, and has over a dozen CD’s to his credit.  Don’t miss his first visit to our area in September, 2009!

Ruth Wyand

From Kill Devil Hills, NC

Ruth Wyand

At age 11, Ruth Wyand would sit in her driveway in Atlantic City, NJ and listen to music her neighbor from Durham, NC would play on his stereo - Ray Charles, Mahalia Jackson, Billie Holliday.  She picked out some of the riffs on her guitar, and was hooked on the blues forever!  From playing in biker bars at age 15, to touring as an acoustic soloist in the US, England, and New Zealand, Ruth has charmed audiences with her skills at flat-picking and finger-picking.  She was the first woman to win top honors at the Gamble Rogers Guitar Competition, and her ability to compose and sing as well makes her a stand-out in any musical line-up! Ruth will perform in our area in October, 2009.

Coyote

Ocracoke Island residents Marcy Brenner and Lou Castro are Coyote, a duo that offers engaging and spontaneous music tinged with jazz, blues, folk and rock.  They are frequent performers at the Ocrafolk Opry near their home, and as touring artists they travel the state and beyond.  They are featured artists in the Nicholas Sparks movie “Nights in Rodanthe”, and both have worked in the music field in other capacities before joining to form Coyote in 2001.  From ballads to blues to zydeco, a Coyote concert promises to be a howling good time!

Beaucoup Blue

Beaucoup Blue is the Americana Philadelphia-based duo of David and Adrian Mowry. Father and son have been performing their roots based music nationally and internationally as a duo, or with a quartet and on occasion quintet. Bridging many gaps in American music, their soulful traditional and contemporary styles mesh into an innovative and authentic sound. Although blues is a staple in their repertoire, they base their love in music from Folk, Soul, R&B, Jazz, Country and Bluegrass. All these interests and influences come out in their original song-writing in a unique way. A handsome range of instruments like six and twelve string guitars, slide guitar, round neck resonator guitar, combined with two soulful voices, encompasses a rich and honest feel, noticeably influenced by familial ties.

Gathering Time

Instead of Peter, Paul & Mary or Crosby, Stills and Nash, think Glen, Stuart and Hillary!  This acoustic vocal trio from New York offers smooth guitar mastery and a blending of voices that is perfection.  Gathering Time has been winning fans and capturing attention with their spirited blend of folk and acoustic originals, as well as unique interpretations of select covers. The lead rotates from one to the other, so each has a chance to shine.   All three members have great song writing abilities, and their three part harmonies make the soul sing!  Come to this concert prepared to give your ears a special treat as Gathering Time expands their fan base to eastern NC.

Danielle Miraglia

A strong steady thumb on an old Gibson guitar showcases the delta blues influenced guitar style of Danielle Miraglia.  Add a raspy, whiskey-tinged voice reminiscent of Lucinda Williams, and you might be tempted to label her a blues artist.  However, while homage is paid to these blues traditions, Danielle’s classic rock verve and eclectic array of song subjects give her a niche of her own.  A creative writing degree originally intended for novels has produced a body of songs and CD’s earning rave reviews, and her sharp wit and engaging stage presence has gained her fans from around the world.  We are fortunate that she will join us here in March 2010.

Angelo M

It’s nice to know that the economic recession has an “up” side.  When Angelo M (short for Melasecca) lost his job in a Pennsylvania steel mill, he tossed his hard hat and picked up his guitar, and the music world has benefited.  Music has always been a large part of Angelo’s life, but since he has been devoted to it full time he has cast a strong impression with his guitar virtuosity and his eclectic acoustic/roots mix. Influences from Ry Cooder, Duane Allman, Leo Kottke, and Chet Atkins have shaped his finger-picking and slide guitar style, with ventures on mandolin and dobro as well.  You will enjoy this gifted artist who doesn’t yet know just how good he is!

Mark your calendars now for all of the great concerts coming up from September 2009 to April 2010.   The same exciting and high quality of folk performances you’re used to is on tap for what promises to be an outstanding concert series in Eastern North Carolina this coming season.
